Why a symbol sometimes shows as an empty box
Because the device you are looking at has no drawing for that character. The character itself is intact and still on your clipboard — only the picture is missing.
A character is not an image. What travels when you copy is a number, and every device turns that number into a shape using the fonts it happens to have installed. Two phones with different fonts show the same clipboard differently, and an older phone may show nothing at all. That is why a combination can look broken here and paste perfectly into a bio a minute later.
So the practical advice is the opposite of what people usually do: if a character looks like an empty box, paste it somewhere else before giving up on it.
